(Video) How India is Abandoning Gandhi for His Killer
A sorry story of a society's transformation thanks to social media.
Some saw it long coming. Others were surprised. Either way, India’s change of embrace from Mahatma Gandhi to Nathuram Godse, his killer, is now near completion.
I thought I was in the former category; after all, I’ve written and spoken countless times about the saffron tide sweeping India. But even I was surprised to watch as some university students repudiated Gandhi and idolized his killer in a video late last year.
After all, a society has to pivot momentously to switch its allegiance from the Father of the Nation to his assassin. The process was well underway for nearly three decades and was turbocharged by the election of Narendra Modi in 2014.
The anecdote from that video came handy this time when I sat to make a video on the prospects of Indian society in the post-Ram Mandir era. Here, I examine the core difference between the Gandhian ideas and those of his ideological foes, mostly the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh whose political wing rules India now.
